Lukaku vs Ibrahimovic – who wins?

Despite Manchester United getting most of their transfer business done early in the summer it has still be a summer of huge change at Old Trafford. Club legend Wayne Rooney departed, Zlatan Ibrahimovic left the club and then rejoined and in the space in between Man Utd signed Lukaku and Lindelof.

When Lukaku signed for Man Utd his only real competition to play as the first choice striker was Marcus Rashford and Antony Martial, both of which have been used more on the wings then in a central position. So when Lukaku signed for £75M you could have bet your house on him being Mourinho’s first choice striker for the season. But now we’re not so sure.

Man Utd re signing Ibrahimovic could have implications on Lukaku’s first team role at Old Trafford handing Mourinho the difficult task of trying to keep both players happy.

Mourinho likes to only use one central striker but when Zlatan returns from Injury he is going to have two very capable strikers at his disposal. We examine who we think Mourinho should go with.

The stats show that per last season the two strikers had remarkably similar stats for scoring and assisting per 90 minutes. Lukaku averaged 0.61 goals per game and 0.16 assists where as Zlatan averaged 0.61 goals per game and 0.18 assists. However when it comes to passing and ball retention Ibrahimovic is streets ahead of Lukaku which may well come into Mourinho’s thinking when picking his starting eleven.

It may be that Ibrahimovic is the better suited striker to play against teams where Man Utd will ba having more possession and where they are having to try and break down a packed out defense. Where as Lukaku could be used in games where Man Utd looking to counter attack where he could use the pace of Lukaku to great affect.

Another option for Mourinho would be to use one striker for league games and one for domestic and European cup competitions. If Mourinho is able to keep both the two strikers happy by only playing them in either league or cup games he would have done a fantastic job.
